No, this post isn’t a promotion this thing is just really cool. The Tilt Hydrometer is one of those homebrewing tools you don’t realize you need until you use it. Instead of constantly sanitizing equipment and pulling samples, this wireless floating hydrometer tracks fermentation gravity and temperature in real time, straight to your phone. Here’s why I use it, how it’s changed my brew days, and the unexpected ways I’ve worked it into my process.

What Is a Tilt Hydrometer?
The Tilt Hydrometer is a floating, Bluetooth-enabled hydrometer that drops directly into your fermenter. It continuously measures specific gravity and temperature, then sends that data to your phone or tablet. No more sample thieves, sticky wort spills, or worrying about contamination. The easy way to understand it is as the float straightens the hydrometer gains a readying. The more it tilts the higher the reading.

Why the Tilt Is a Game-Changer
- No More Sample Pulls – Reduce contamination risks by leaving your fermenter sealed.
- Real-Time Gravity Tracking – Watch fermentation progress day by day.
- Temperature Monitoring – Catch temp swings before they stress your yeast.
- Stuck Fermentation Alerts – Spot problems early and save your batch.
My most efficient use for this tool is when I’m fermting in a keg. I just throw this tool in and let it go. More info here! Keg fermentation and how to ferment in the perfect environment
How I Personally Use It
When I first used the Tilt, I was surprised, my “steady” 67°F fermentation actually swung 5–6°F during the day. That explained a lot of my past off-flavors. Since then, the Tilt has become one of my most trusted tools.
Here’s where I’ve found it especially useful:
- Fermenting in kegs: I drop the Tilt right into my keg so I can see fermentation activity without guessing. It’s made keg-fermenting so much easier. It also can just float in there while I drink the keg and it doesn’t affect it.
- Dialing in batch size: I’ll float the Tilt in my wort before pitching yeast. It shows me gravity instantly, so I know exactly how much dilution I need to land a clean 5-gallon batch. FYI You can do this by using a dilution calculator found on the web.
Both of these have saved me from overshooting gravity and overfilling my kegs.
Is the Tilt Hydrometer Worth It?
At around $135, the Tilt isn’t the cheapest piece of brewing gear. But it’s a one-time buy that pays off quickly in time saved, mistakes avoided, and the sheer fun of watching fermentation in real time. For me, it’s a “why didn’t I get this sooner?” piece of equipment that makes brew days smoother and smarter.
Final Thoughts
If you’re a homebrewer looking to cut down on guesswork, the Tilt Hydrometer is worth considering. Whether you’re tracking gravity curves, catching temperature swings, or just want the convenience of sealed fermentation, it’s a tool that can level up your brewing game.
Cheers!

Notes
The tilt hydrometer is very versatile and durable however if you find beer inside of it you’ll need to properly dry it and replace the battery as well as NOT DRINKING WHAT IT WAS SWIMMING IN. Little PSA for you just in case.
